4TH PLACE IN THE TTT IN VALENCIA
CANYON//SRAM Racing had a solid start to its La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es campaign when it finished in fourth place in the team time trial opening stage today in Valencia. The team was down to five starters, with Justyna Czapla and Neve Bradbury unable to start due to illness and under the team’s medical advice.
Maike van der Duin led the team down the start ramp in Valencia and into the relatively straight-forward 16km course. With a headwind in the first half, the team passed the intermediate time check in third place, 12 seconds behind the fastest team, Lidl Trek. Lidl Trek went on to win the stage, but CANYON//SRAM Racing was able to finish strongly and take back some seconds in the second half. The five-rider squad crossed the line in fourth place on the stage, with riders now positioned in 18th to 22nd on the general classification, respectively. In the 2024 La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es there is no Best Rider Young classification, but Antonia Niedermaier finished the stage with the daily award.
RIDER REACTIONS
Maike van der Duin: “It was really good. We had five riders, so we weren’t sure how it would go before the race, but we had a good team spirit. Everyone knew what they could do, their goals, and their tasks for the race. In the end, fourth at eight seconds behind, we can be proud of the circumstances. As a team, we can be motivated by today and trust that together, we are strong, and we’ve had a good start to the Vuelta.”
Kasia Niewiadoma: “It was as hard as expected being a team time trial. I’m very proud of how my teammates raced. They’re so strong and we’re buzzing from this race together.”
