Back in Italy for Giro dell'Emilia

“Honestly, I think it’ll be a fast race on the flats, but I don’t think much of the race will happen until that final San Luca climb. It’s a short race and, although no doubt teams will be aggressive, typically when it’s super flat the peloton rolls along way quicker than a breakaway and uses a lot less energy. Of course, if there’s wind, it’s a different story. But it’s not looking that way. So I feel it’ll be a race of looking after the climbers, so they use as little energy as possible. Then it’ll be full gas lead outs into the bottom of the climb before it’s fought out between the climbers,” Tiffany Cromwell describes tomorrow’s Giro dell’Emilia for CANYON//SRAM Racing.

Tiffany, who will have her first race of the season restart, will be joined by Alena Amialiusik, Elena Cecchini, Rotem Gafinovitz, Kasia Niewiadoma and Omer Shapira for the 87km race in Bologna, Italy.

“I’m looking forward to finally pin the number on again. It’s been a long time coming,” admitted Tiffany.

“I expect I’ll play a support role, especially leading into the climb to the finish. My goal is to commit to the team plan and help support the team to a podium or victory. Having not raced yet since the restart, whilst a lot of the peloton has already. It’s hard to know where I’m at with race speed in the legs. I’ve been doing some good training over the last months. My shape is decent. I hope I can race strongly and can jump back into race mode and play an integral part to the race and the team,” said Tiffany.

Alena Amialiusik, who has finished on the podium at Giro dell’Emilia in 2016 and was tenth in 2019, agrees with Cromwell’s description of the parcours.

“I expect a very fast race at the beginning because of the short distance and the big roads. There will be a fight for positioning before the final climb, but we have a strong team and this sort of race suits us. Last year we made a mistake to go too early at the start of the climb, so we’ll get it right this time. I really like the race and I think we can achieve a good result on the San Luca climb.”

The 1.PRO race starts at 12:00CEST on Tuesday 18 August, and can be followed on Twitter with #GSEmilia and with a replay on RaiSport (Italy) at 15:00CEST.
