Tough race at Ronde van Vlaanderen
It was a tough day at Ronde van Vlaanderen yesterday with Kasia Niewiadoma our best placed rider in 20th position. The race was won by Annemiek van Vleuten (MOV) who attacked a small group of leaders on the Paterberg, the final climb of the day. Van Vleuten held off a seven-rider chase group to cross the line solo.
“I don’t want to use word disappointed because it doesn’t describe it. I feel like it’s a wasted opportunity for a beautiful result. I had great feelings for most of the race and then all of the sudden I had nothing. I was hoping for a better result for the team,” said Kasia after the finish.
Team captain Tiffany Cromwell summarised the race.
“As a team, up until the Berg Ten Houte we were riding well, we had good positioning and it was all going to plan. At the Kanarieberg, we lost most of the team unfortunately. Kasia was in the front and I was happy I could get there too. I had some dropped riders to get around on the Kanarieberg and then had to do a big bridge over the top but was glad I was there to help Kasia.”
Tiffany continued, “After that point there was still 40km to go and we didn’t have numbers so I focused on doing what I could for Kasia. We fought hard, but I couldn’t make it past the Oude Kwaremont climb, and Kasia just didn’t have the legs to go with the first group. Sometimes that just happens and you can’t do much about it other than learn and get fight ready to fight for the next one.”
