SHARI GETS HER FIRST WORLD TOUR PODIUM
Shari Bossuyt took her first Women’s World Tour podium today when she sprinted to third place on the second stage of the Women’s Tour in Harlow. The CANYON//SRAM Racing rider finished the 92km stage strongly, guiding her team to bring her in position for the bunch sprint. The stage was won by Lorena Wiebes (DSM).
“I tried to use what we had learned from our recent bunch sprints. We were quite early in the front but I tried to manage it. Fortunately, I was able to avoid the large crash that happened inside 10km to go,” explained Shari.
“My teammates did really well. Elise brought me to a better position at the end and I could sprint to third place. There was probably the second place for me in that sprint today but I was locked in. I am very satisfied with my first podium place at the World Tour level!”
In the battle for the mountain jersey, Elise picked up more points and finished the stage third in the classification.
“Being a sprint stage it was nice to have a little goal during the stage with the two intermediates for the QOM jersey. I can’t wait to have real hills from tomorrow onwards and to really fight hard on those for the team. For now, I’m so happy for Shari! We did a good lead out with Kasia and Tiffany and Shari finishing it off with a podium is amazing. It gives our team a lot of motivation for the next days,” said Elise.
Shari goes into tomorrow’s stage three seventh in the general classification, +10 seconds behind Clara Copponi (FDJ). Alice, Elise and Kasia are 20th, 21st and 22nd in the overall, all at just +14 seconds. Alice keeps the lead in the Best British Rider classification.
On stage three the climbs get a little longer and a little steeper, but with more than 20km from the top of the last climb to the finish line, the chance for another bunch sprint is very likely.
