Hannah Barnes 5th in Tour de Yorkshire
Thousands of fans lined the roads on today’s ASDA Women’s Tour de Yorkshire. The spectacular race from Tadcaster to Harrogate was won by Lizzie Deignan (DTL) solo, ahead of Coryn Rivera (SUN) and Giorgia Bronzini (WHT). British road champion and CANYON//SRAM rider Hannah Barnes finished fifth from the lead group’s sprint to the line.
After an aggressive start to the race with Alexis Ryan and Barbara Guarischi present in several breakaway attempts, a 10-rider move formed around 15km before Côte de Lofthouse. Guarischi represented CANYON//SRAM Racing but after the steep 4km QOM climb, the peloton had split into several groups and the decisive moves were made.
Hannah Barnes was in the first chase group of 14 riders as they tried to bridge the gap to leaders Deignan, Anna van der Breggen and Dani King. The gap for the lead trio to the chase came as close as 35 seconds but an attack from Deignan in the final kilometres saw her solo to the line, whilst Barnes sprinted to fifth place.
“I felt better today than I have last week in the Ardennes classics. It was a nice course and great to see so many people cheering for us, it’s a really exciting race. I’m happy I had good legs and although our goal was podium, fifth was the best place I could manage at the end today,” said Barnes after the finish.
