ANOTHER DAY IN THE WHITE JERSEY FOR ANTONIA
Two days and two Best Young Rider jerseys for Antonia Niedermaier in the team at the Giro d’Italia Women. The peloton faced hot and humid conditions on the second stage from Sirmione to Volta Mantovana. An early two-rider breakaway had a lead of over six minutes at one point of the stage before the peloton started a chase, reeling in the last rider with just a few kilometres remaining on the 102km stage.
Chiara Consonni (UAE) won the bunch sprint with Antonia crossing the line just behind teammate Neve Bradbury on the same time. Antonia moves to eleventh on the general classification at +48 seconds, with Agnieszka Skalniak-Sójka now in sixteenth. Antonia leads the Best Young Rider classification by three seconds ahead of tomorrow’s first hilly stage.
RIDER REACTIONS
Antonia Niedermaier: “Today’s stage was quite hectic at the start. The breakaway got a big gap before the teams really started the chase. The final 40km circuit with the little climb was a real fight for position, so it was quite a tiring stage from that perspective.
It’s a nice feeling to be leading the young rider classification. After my crash in last year’s Giro, where I was in the white jersey, it’s nice to be back on the podium and in the jersey again. I’m really happy about it. Our goal is to improve Neve and me’s position on GC. Our stages are still coming. Tomorrow will be a fight again before we start the final climb, but we’re looking forward to it.”
