Elena sprints to third on stage four
Elena Cecchini sprinted to third today on the fourth stage of Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour in Gera, Germany. CANYON//SRAM Racing played an aggressive role in an exciting stage.
Tanja Erath was in the first two breakaways of the day, followed by Tiffany Cromwell and Christa Riffel. But it was a move with Cecchini and Alice Barnes that was created before the peloton reached the Wall of Meerane (a 13% cobbled climb) in the throes of a torrential downpour that became the main breakaway of the day. Barnes later escaped with Lucinda Brand (SUN) and the duo were caught just kilometres before the line.
While Trixi Worrack tried a late attack to no avail, it came down to a reduced bunch sprint, with Cecchini finishing on the podium for the second time this week in third place. Tomorrow the peloton races a twilight 102km stage in the city of Dörtendorf.
