Alena 10th on the opening stage in California
The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women’s Race Empowered by SRAM Tour of California kicked off today with the opening stage in South Lake Tahoe. The 117km loop around the scenic Lake Tahoe, was won by 2016 overall winner Megan Guarnier (DLT) from teammate Anna van der Breggen with Arlenis Sierra (ASA) third.
Alena Amialiusik was the team’s best finisher in tenth place. After the stage Amialiusik said “In the final kilometres there was quite a lot of action because everyone wanted to be at the front before the last climb. My teammates did a nice job to bring me to a good position and they kept the pace high in the final.”
“At one point with maybe 1km to go I was in the front and alone so I thought okay now I have to try something, I can’t wait for others to start. My acceleration was okay but in the end not enough. I am overall happy with the race and for sure the work of my team mates. We’re looking forward to some more stages.”
Stage 2 starts tomorrow at 10:35 (PST) from South Lake Tahoe with two long QOM climbs. Follow on Twitter with #UCIWWT and #AmgenTOCwomen.
