ANTONIA NIEDERMAIER RETURNS TO RACING WITH 8TH AT GP CHAMBERY
CANYON//SRAM Generation took its best season result so far after Antonia Niedermaier stormed to eighth place at GP Féminin de Chambéry. Teammate Nastya Kolesava finished in fourteenth place.
Following two local laps, Antonia and Nastya were positioned by their teammates into the five-lap hilly circuit around the small city of Chambéry-Le-Vieux. A constant change in the race situation with various attacks and breakaway constellations followed, including from CANYON//SRAM Generaiton rider Maddie Le Roux. With the undulating terrain and high pace, the race became one of attrition and the peloton steadily dwindled in numbers. The attacks continued in the final lap, where Antonia finished in eighth, just 32 seconds behind the solo winner Lore De Schepper.
RIDER REACTIONS
Antonia Niedermaier: “It was a hard and really hot race day. The race went quite well for us. My teammates did a great job to bring Nastya and me in a good position. In the end, we could all feel the heat and the hard work we did, that’s why we couldn’t make it on the podium. But, all in all, we can be happy with our performance. There is still a lot to learn for all of us but I am always happy to do some races with the development team! They are such a nice and strong team.”
“I am happy with my eighth place but also a little bit disappointed. I really felt that it was my first race after a long period of being sick. I’m looking forward to improving for the next races.”
Maddie Le Roux: “Today was a hot race, literally and figuratively. It was as tough as expected but we had a good result with Antonia and Nastya today and that was the aim.”
“I was in and out of the front group today, in both directions. The first two small laps were fast and technical and I did struggle a bit with my positioning, but eventually got back to the front of the race. My job was then to try and attack on the third of the five big laps to see how the peloton would react. I stayed away with a few riders for a bit but eventually we were brought back and then shortly after that I helped Nastya get back before the one longer descent that went back to the start for the next lap. After that, I was done, but I’m happy I could play a part for the team and I’m hopeful we can build on this going forward.”
