KASIA SECOND AT BRABANTSE PIJL

Kasia Niewiadoma took second place at today’s Brabantse Pijl in Overijse, Belgium. The CANYON//SRAM Racing rider attacked from a five-rider group in the final kilometre to cross the line and step onto the podium behind Demi Vollering (SDW).

“Everyone from our team was committed to making the race. We learned some lessons from Amstel and wanted to race today differently, and we did that. Having Pauline ahead meant that we could play a different game and create opportunities that would deliver a result for the team,” described Kasia after the podium ceremony.

Teammate Pauliena Rooijakkers played a crucial role for CANYON//SRAM Racing, attacking towards the end of the penultimate lap. Rooijakkers was joined by Vollering and the duo stayed away despite several riders trying to make the bridge across. While Vollering made a move on the cobblestone climb, Rooijakkers worked tirelessly to stay in reach. Behind, a small group, including Niewiadoma, would eventually catch Rooijakkers. Again Rooijakkers worked on the front and set up Niewiadoma who attacked the group with 800m remaining.

“Pauliena’s attack was perfect and she did an amazing job in the breakaway and then also in the finish. When we caught Pauliena, the DSM riders didn’t want to work so Pauliena rolled with one of them, and it set me or the finish,” said Kasia.

“Once we got to the final kilometre I sort of wanted to plan it but then it was a gut instinct and I went. I was saying to myself okay I’m doing it. I thought Lippert might come around me but when I looked back and saw her face, I knew that I had it.”

After being disappointed with her fifth place at Amstel Gold Race last Sunday, Kasia said she was pleased to be on the podium today, ahead of the two remaining Ardennes Classics next week.

“It’s nice to feel that I’m there, fighting and capable of the podium. To get a podium for the team is a reward for everyone.  Today has boosted my confidence in the remaining Ardennes Classics. I feel like I regained my mental approach to the race, attacking and being responsible, and showing early that I belong to be with the best in the world. ”
